Tracing and Red Cross Messages

Armed conflict and natural disaster leave millions of people around the globe in the urgent need of humanitarian assistance every year.
Adding to the physical losses, the confusion and chaos surrounding war and natural disasters often separates families just when they need each other most. Tragically, when families and loved ones are separated by war or disaster, their suffering is greater. The American Red Cross, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and 178 national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, work to reconnect families in times of disaster and conflict around the world.

Services provided by the American Red Cross and International Movement include--
  • Locating missing loved ones when the separation is because of war, disaster, or civil unrest
  • Sending Red Cross Messages between separated family members--civilians, prisoners of war and political detainees
  • Obtaining information about the fate of civilians, especially those separated during the Holocaust and World War II
  • Processing international disaster welfare inquiries when normal communications are disrupted
  • Obtaining information on the health and welfare of close relatives in peacetime when normal communications have failed
  • Providing information and referral services

    Holocaust and War Victims Tracing

The Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center is a national clearninghouse for persons seeking the fates of loved ones mising since the Holocause and its aftermath. We assist U.S. residents searching for proof of internment, forced/slave labor, or evacuation from former Soviet territories on themselves or family members. This documentation may be required for reparations.
  • All of our tracing services are confidential and free of charge.
  • We pioneered a process with the International Tracing Service which results in expedited replies to searches
  • We use the worldwide network of 181 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies and the Magen David Adom in Israel
  • We also consult museums, archives, and international organizations to further facilitate traciing requests.
  • Cases remain open, and if new information becomes available, it is immediately shared with the inquirer.
